Music Mix by IYB - Sun 22/11/2009 at 10:22
GRIMELOCK (Stainage records, Belgium) compiled a new studio mix that gives you a glimpse of their versatility both as djs and producers and a fresh musical statement for 2009.

“Roll with Us” draws the line for the old season and follows up a hot summer with explosive gigs at festivals and venues throughout Europe.

Selection-wise this is a voyage in bass music which counts among their own productions, some of the anthems of the year, forthcoming and choice releases that bring together dubstep, 2stepgarage, reggae, hip hop and house.

Fierce basslines, sharp beats and rudeboy riddims meet the sexiest vocals and garage swings in a skanking space cake topped with some of the finest house to make a multi layered sonic delight that doesn’t lose its dancefloor nerve.

Imagine the mix as the tip of the iceberg when it comes to their live showcases... And don’t forget this name: Stainage Records, big tings a gwaarn!

Who Is Kyulo?

Since the year 2000, Kyulo is one of Belgium's very first breakbeat (which was at that time still called "nu-skool breaks"Emoticon_smile dj's, with a history before that,  in spinning techno, drum'n'bass, reggae, new-wave etc...
From then untill today, his style is constantly influenced by the latest evolutions in Bass Music.
Whether it's funky or progressive breaks, dubstep, tech-funk or electro, fidget, house or just brutal raving madness,
it can all be found in his sets wich are guaranteed to blow up any party, as long as the system & crowd can take the Bass!
For more historical facts, such as organised parties, name-dropping, radio-appearances etc...,
just head over to www.myspace.com/djkyulo where you'll find everything you want and don't want to know.

What's in this mix?

As for music... Listen to this mix and you'll get an idea of what a party-set could sound like.
This one takes you on an energetic journey of rock- and funk influenced breaks, wobbly and dirty basses, spicy rhythms and drum-patterns,
heavyweight tech-funk and more, a couple of forthcoming tracks and plenty of other stuff to feed your speakers.

These 60 mins. however, are just a very small extract of what's in the box.
For (even) more diversity and the latest releases in basstunes, listen every thursday from 19:00 - 21:00 to "Deft Kompoundz"
Kyulo's weekly live radioshow on www.ibreaks.co.uk (or follow the archived shows on www.myspace.com/deftkompoundz)!
Or... if you're a promoter, just book him @ your next party Emoticon_smile

dj sun papa 3000 - UK Funky / BE Techno

download

(tracklist at the bottom)

Just like the beginning of grime, UK Funky oozes potential.

Wiley's first white label's (Ice Rink, Freeze, Eskimo), Youngstar's tracks, bad stuff, minimal, punk, digital.

Here in Brussels in the beginning of 2000, we used to have a drum&bass oriented shop (Stress Da Bass R.I.P.) where they had mysterious white labels, straight from London.

Finding the Ice rink tunes could transform you. It made you see the music in a vectrex sort of dimension and feel the iced void after a REWIND...

What I want to say is, that UK Funky was just too exciting. Honestly the name UK Funky is poorly chosen, but I think that auto-sabotage was a great idea and a good kick-off.

I adore Crazy Cousin's hit "I see you" with Kimona's superb voice, but the thing I most fell in love with is the darker, minimal, funky step, LiL Silva wise, with the genious cover of Musical Mob's Pulse X or the last Kode 9's 12" "black sun" on Hyperdub.

Hyperdub is definitly the best British label all round for electronic music. Their stuff can refuel your senses, they come with a real proposition for something new and cold, commodore and mechanic.

After my mix the other night, I got a remark I didn't like too much "hey Sun Papa 3000, are you going Latin now?". Not that I don't like Latin but I need something a bit more rigid. Not the kind of stuff you can find in a lot of UK funky house where you can't help to think of annoying Berkeley Hippies, when you hear the ever present Bongo's.

I feel closer to New Beat UK's  "Bostich" intro of Yello in loop mode.

You have to invent, go to new record shops, make new networks, find new galaxies, ways to mix and styles...You've got no choice but to make your OWN Funky House.

Music Mix by Low Up - Mon 06/04/2009 at 13:21

It involves an explosive live performance by Schlachthofbronx from Munich, Germany. Incorporating elements of dancehall, dubstep, kuduro, electro, house and folk music alike, their bass-heavy tunes make the perfect soundtrack for another sweaty ghetto rave affair like only Low Up can provide. Bring on the confetti gun, the Bavarians are coming!

4/ Read this excellent interview made by dj 319 from low up

Here's a little q&a with Jakob and Bene from Schlachthofbronx...

The first question is this picture of Munich nightlife that i found on the internet. Do you perhaps recognize any hardcore Bronx fans?

Ha ha, not really. But... hey, on the left, in the back, ain't that your mother?

How did this collaboration come about and what sort of stuff have you done before?

We are three people doing Schlachthofbronx. One is a drummer in various bands, the other two are dj's. The focal point of our music is that the people have to motherfucking dance and scream! We are not ashamed of using whatever style it takes to get them to this point, be it dancehall, polka, bavarian or hungarian folk music, dubstep, uk funky, hiphop, electro, booty bass, ghettotek or whatever. One could say the Schlachthofbronx sound is like a massive rhinoceros driving around in an autoscooter, heavily drunk.

Does the name Schlachthofbronx refer to a particular part of Munich? Is that where you live?

Yes, 'schlachthof' refers to the big meat fabric in our neighboorhood and 'bronx' represents our aim to create something like a block party kind of atmosphere where the dancers interact with the dj's to get the party cooking. Other parts of Munich are nicknamed Schwarlem, Fürstenfeldbrooklyn, South Sendling and Giesing Heights.

Could you illustrate with an anecdote how ghetto your neighbourhood actually is?

One of us lives above a christian sect. Their plastic altar is wall to wall to the dancefloor of what we call a tabledance bar. The owner wears old FC Bayern trainers. On the other side of the street there's a former public bath where leftwing anarchist youths organize punk concerts every other day. Not really ghetto, but we love it.

What got you into bass music? Any favourite artists or records?
Too many to mention. Right now it would be Kingwendu from Tanzania.

PC or Mac?
Mac.

Digital is more versatile but vinyl still sounds better. Do you agree?

We choose cd's. We don't wait for a vinyl release if we want to play out a track. And soundwise: we dare you to prove your records sound better than our cd's!

What does the title 'Landergschwister Isatalerghettoschuten' mean? Is it even German?

That's a remix we made for G.Rag und die Landlergschwister, a really good folk group from Bavaria. It is called the 'isartaler ghettoschützen remix'  to be precise and yes, that is German. Difficult to translate but basically it's s a parody of the typical names of all these fake make-money-with-cheap-wannabe-traditional-songs kind of bands here in Germany. Isartal is a part of Bavaria and schützen is like shooter... Actually, this track is one of the four tracks on our 'We Run This' ep that will come out soon on UK label On The Brink.

How should the Belgian people prepare themselves for your live show?

Lots of sleep, healthy food, thoughts about nice things... and then come and waste all that in one night, bumping and grinding! Useful items to bring to the party include rave whistles, rave horns (the ones with gas or compressed air are the best), small towels to wave, anything that makes noise really (surprise us)... And if somebody has a confetti gun, that would be great! Ours just broke down the other day and we might not get a new one in time.

Music Mix by IYB - Mon 30/03/2009 at 11:38

Phonetics on his mix: When they asked me to play on dubstep parties my selection goes from Dubstep, Grime to Garage, I like Dubstep in the direction of 2562, Kode 9 & Burial but I also enjoy Kromestar, Benga or the whole Grime, UK Garage & Bassline thing. On parties where other music gets played my record choice goes from Funk, Hip Hop, Breaks, Niche, Kuduro, Minimal, House and much more. I find it hard to focus on one genre, but Dubstep is an excellent genre to mix other music with, so that gives me the opportunity to make eclectic mixes by still playing just a "Dubstep set".

InYourBass asked me to do an eclectic mix (like I did on the IYB New Years party). The mix starts of with some UK Garage that goes to 4*4 Bassline Garage, then makes a small trip through Grime and Dubstep followed with some Crunk. After that I'm moving into some Soca with then again some Crunk and in between unexpected tunes. For this mix, I tried to make it as versatile as possible but still with the UK Bass as the main influence.

Enjoy!

When IYB asked me to do an official podcast for their blog, I wanted to offer them something special.

Since a while, I was observing the new "vibe" of the electronique music style coming from the third world countries, and especialy the Kuduro.
Coming from Angola and Portugal, this new style uses traditional african music (semba) and several different kinds of electronic music (house, electro,...).The name Kuduro has a double meaning, you can translate it as "hard ass" but it's also a type of dance where the female dancer bounces ands swings her bottom to the rhythm.

The genre got heavily promoted by M.I.A. and Diplo and now you can see the movement spreading fast through local clubs (remember the Buraka show in Recyclart last week!) and more globaly trough the internet.
Today, the main actors are starting to see some international fame! Most known are probably Buraka Som Systema, but dj Znobia and dj Manya are some common names often related to the genre.

For my personal mix, I've chosen 12 songs, and edited it by keeping the best "breaks".

The collectif N_RV are responsable for the grafism.

Hailing from Orlando South Rakkas Crew, part of Diplo's Mad Decent, are probably most known of their hit Get Mad Again.

Dennis ‘Dow Jones’ Shaw, busy touring trough Europe, still found the time  to make an exclusive mix for InYourBass, where he shows his mixmaster skills. Expect heavy electro beats, sometimes even with an 80's touch, blended with a lot of dancehall influences.

Listen to the third IYB Podcast as a preview to our 2nd InYourBass Party at Recyclart on the 20th of March, where South Rakkas Crew will be headlining!

Lazer Sword are Lando Kal, (Antaeus Roy), and LL, (Bryant Rutledge). A Californian (San Francisco) producers duo and a live electronic act. Their sound can best be described as future, glitch, gameboy mixed with hiphop beats, techno and electronica. The Glitch Mob's sound or closer to home Rustie and Hudson Mohawke aren't far when you listen to their mixes.

If you have the chance, go check them out live on their European tour!

Music Mix by Low Up - Fri 16/01/2009 at 07:15

Besides famine, terror, economic collapse and some mulatto dude who used to do coke being elected P.O.T.U.S.A.
the year 2008 will be remembered for the birth of LOW UP, introducing Brussels to the concept of dangerous nightclubbing.

This monthly allnighter quickly became renowned for its fundamentally eclectic approach, with both residents and guest dj`s meticulously combining the most upfront and energetic pieces of contemporary dance music from all over the world into a bass-driven whirlwind of rhythms and chants. Inspirator DJ Mellow decided to make this mixtape showcasing some of the tunes that caused maximum damage throughout the first year and it is safe to say that it relentlessly goes from strength to strength.

Incorporating the best bits of baile funk, ghetto house, booty breaks, dubstep and kuduro this recording accurately illustrates the surging energy and excitement of the highly addictive melting pot experience that is LOW UP.

Have a taste!

He was supposed to be playing last week in Botanique (Brussels), but decided after the sudden death of his mother, to cancel his European tour. But he'll sure be coming to Belgium again next year.

If this sounds all new to you, make sure you check out this mix. It contains some of the best hiphop/off beat/dubstep/experimental releases of this year.

Music Mix by bunzer0 - Wed 26/11/2008 at 10:50

This edition is pretty versatile, from the "Bitch Smakin Killah" raw vibez to the "Caporal Town" sweet reggae vibes or the "Austria" deepness.
In terms of influences, the tunes are bringing sounds from every genre like electro, house, techno, hip  hop, reggae, ...
They included some promo tunes taken from the current Stain001 release and also the forthcoming Stain002 and STAINmp3001 release like "Justice" and "The City" produced by Grimelock, or the big anthem "Squarefootage" by Saviour.
U will also find some bootleg craziness like the massive techno classic tune "Raw Plastic" transposed in the dubstep vibe by Saviour and Kursk.
Variety is the key and they know it !
Stainage ! Light It Up !
